The Abraham’s Window brotherhood has welcomed its newest members. In August, MDHA’s Resident Services Department hosted the second annual induction ceremony for the program, which serves teen boys living in MDHA housing.
The inductees received a certificate and medal before reciting the Abraham’s Window pledge, which ends with the statement, “I commit to becoming a young man who leads with character, lives with purpose and leaves a positive legacy.”
Last year’s inaugural group of teens was also recognized with the gift of an official Abraham’s Window green jacket to celebrate one year of focusing on education, personal responsibility and community service.
The ceremony also featured an inspirational keynote address by MDHA’s President and CEO, Dr. Troy D. White.
Michael, President of Abraham’s Window and a resident of Historic Preston Taylor Apartments, gave a speech to thank the many family members, MDHA employees and community partners who helped the boys reach their full potential.
“We have learned how to serve our community and how to advocate for ourselves as well as others,” said Michael. “We’ve learned that we are important, we have a voice, we deserve and are worthy. We know we are the leaders of the future. We don’t want to be just leaders; we want to leave a legacy behind as well.”
“Abraham’s Window is built upon integrity, responsibility and achievement, believing that when a boy does right, there is always hope in what is to come for him, said Michael Green, MDHA Resident Services Manager and Abraham’s Window founder. “Being a man who was raised in Nashville, I witnessed and experienced many instances of injustice. I am proud to work for MDHA’s Resident Services Department and serve our residents by designing programs such as Abraham’s Window, which I hope will make the playing field more level for those who come behind me.”
This program was also supported by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, Nashville Public Health Department and Meharry Medical College School of Global Health. MDHA appreciates each organization and individual who stepped up to mentor and invest in the lives of young MDHA residents.
